2009 · Comedy, Coming of age, Buddy film

3 Idiots (2009), directed by Rajkumar Hirani and starring Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi, is a comedy‑drama about three engineering students whose friendship and ideals confront a pressure‑filled academic system. Adapted in part from a contemporary novel and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the film mixes broad humor, musical set pieces and poignant drama to critique rote learning and parental expectations. Through flashbacks and a present‑day search for a missing friend, the narrative examines themes of passion versus conformity, the human cost of institutional success metrics, and the sustaining power of friendship. The tone alternates between uproarious and tender, aiming for both crowd‑pleasing entertainment and social commentary.
